Electrical work requirements to consider before upgrading your home in Bedford.

We are constantly asked by our customers that live in the Bedford area if we are Part P registered electricians and if the work will need to be notifiable once completed. Here we explain some of the common questions we are faced with as your local Bedford electricians.

What is Part P?🤔

Part P was introduced into the Building Regulations by the Government in 2005. Any electrician carrying out electrical work in a domestic property must make sure that the work is designed and installed to protect people and the building from fire and electric shocks. Part P was put in place to keep you and your family as safe as possible from electrical hazards and applies to new build domestic properties, as well as any alterations or additions to electrical installations in existing domestic properties, including full or partial house rewires.

Part P responsibilityâś…

By law, all homeowners and landlords must be able to prove that all electrical installation work conforms to Part P requirements. If you can’t prove that the electrical installation meets Part P; you will be committing a criminal offence. If you’re unsure, please get in contact with us.

I’ve had electrical work carried out in my garage, does this need to meet Part P requirements?

Some electrical installation work in your home, garden, conservatory, garage or outbuilding needs to be notified to your local Building and planning dept. This will depend on the extent of the work carried out for example, if a new circuit has been installed or a replacement consumer unit has been fitted, it will then need to meet Part P of the Building Regulations.

My home requires electrical work, what do I need to do before electrical work can begin?

If you hire a registered electrician who is listed with one of the Government approved Part P schemes such as the NICEIC, you don’t need to do anything as your electrician will do everything for you. If the electrical work isn't being carried out by a registered electrician you should tell your local authority building control about the installation before it starts.

How do I know if my local electrician is registered?⚡

You can ask them who they are registered with and then check on the Electrical Competent register. There are a few different scheme providers. The NICEIC are perhaps the most recognisable but there is also NAPIT to name a couple. We strongly recommend that you use a local registered electrician for any form of electrical work your home in Bedford requires.
