Rewiring homes in 5-7 days – A look inside the way NRG ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION SERVICES rewires your Home.

Hi, I’m Robert, the owner of NRG ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION SERVICES – Your local expert electricians in Bedford! Over the last 11 years we have been rewiring homes in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire and can boast over 100 homes rewired. We consider ourselves experts in the field, and so I wanted to address one of the most common questions we get asked when people just like yourself are thinking about a home rewire.

How long does it take to rewire a house?

Before we dive into the details of rewiring a house, let me introduce NRG ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION SERVICES. We're a team of expert electricians who specialise in rewiring houses. Over the past 11 years, we've completed over 100 home rewiring projects, ranging from small bungalows to large multi-story houses. We pride ourselves on our commitment to customer service and our attention to detail. Our team is always professional, respectful, and transparent, and we make sure to communicate with our clients every step of the way.

Now let’s get into...

The rewiring process

  1. Step 1.  Before we start with the rewiring of your Bedford home the first step is to assess the property and accurately plan where all of your electrical outlets and accessories will be positioned, and also plan the wiring routes, there may be some obstacles in our way so the clearer this is before the works start, the faster and more effectively we can undertake the project and get your house back in shape. During this stage we will mark out all the chases on the walls so when it’s time to get going, our team know exactly what to do.
  2. Step 2.  Disconnect and remove old wiring. This will be dependent on whether you plan to live in the property whilst the work is carried out, if you do, we will work around your requirements. This can be done fairly quickly, most of the wiring is pulled out when we commence putting in the new wiring, we always endeavour to try to use similar cable routes through floors and ceiling where possible so as to limit the amount of new holes drilled through the existing building structure, it also makes the job faster for you and us.
  3. Step 3.  First fixing. The first fix is the messy works. This is where we will chase the walls for flush finish or install trunking for surface mounted finish, fitting the back boxes and installing all the new cabling. During this stage, the house will look a lot more like a building site than a home and is easily the longest and most labour-intensive part of the project. This is where time can be won or lost on the project.
  4. Step 4.  Second fix, testing and inspecting. Once all the cabling has been installed our team can move on to connecting all of your new switches, sockets and lights and begin [powering up the installation. Whilst we are powering up, we will take time to test the installation using a multi-function meter to ensure that the circuits and perfectly safe and that no damage has occurred to the new wiring during the first and 2nd fix stages.
  5. Step 5.  Cleaning and handover. Rewiring is a messy job and all of our home rewires come with a full clean. Our team will swiftly move through the house room to room, sweeping, cleaning and wiping any floors and surfaces to make sure that when you arrive back at the property the place is spick and spam ready for you to move your belongings into the place and live In the sound knowledge that your home is electrically safe and will be for the next 30+ years. We will then Handover any certificates and give instructions on how to operate any equipment if necessary.

This process on an average 3-bedroom house will take around 5-7 days.

The process can be sped up with bigger teams if needed and not all rewires need to be completed so quick but as a general rule of thumb, for an in and out rewire – 5 days is the golden number.

What can be done to speed up the rewiring process?

Clear communication and planning

This is key to a smooth-running project. The clearer you are with your ideas and specifications of what you want and where you want it will help keep to the pace required to get the job done in the best time scale possible. Having to keep stopping to ask questions because the specification wasn’t clear enough could lead to days being added to a project.

Team size and experience

A team of two to three made up of a lead electrician, and electrician/experienced apprentice will rewire a standard house in 5 to7 days providing planning has been thought about beforehand. Increasing the team size can massively reduce the time spent on the project. However, a larger team will require very precise planning as any hold ups on site can result in big cost implications. No-one wants to be paying for 6 people not being able to complete tasks whilst a client decides what height they want the TV!

Accessibility of the property

The clearer the better. We always advise our clients that moving your belongings into storage and vacating the property for a week is always best if it’s possible. We get a clear run at rewiring the house as quickly, safely and efficiently as possible and you get to not have to stay in a dusty house for a week. It can work out much more cost effective for you to move your belongings into storage and go on holiday or into temp accommodation for the week whilst you have your property rewired than what it would cost for us to rewire an occupied property whilst trying to climb furniture, tidy up as we work and reinstate temporary electrical services every evening.
